As someone who just started this last year, my recommendation is to go through the ROS wiki page in a specific way.
First: http://wiki.ros.org/ROS/Introduction This will give you a good overview to what exactly ROS is, how it's structured, etc. Keep going to the next session until you finish.
Second: http://wiki.ros.org/ROS/Tutorials This will teach you important features and aspects of ROS.
