I couldn't get this to work with rqt_plot and there is no debug output. However I found a nice little plugin for rqt that I ported to PyQt5 so that it can be used in kinetic. See our branch here: https://github.com/isys-vision/rqt_joint_trajectory_plot/tree/pyqt5

Just add it to your catkin workspace, compile, re-source and load it in rqt
