Hi everyone, I'm new around here and with ROS in general, as mentioned in the title. I'm currently working on my undergraduate thesis which involves map generation with an autonomous robot and using Kinect as its sensor. At first, it was planned to do it using CARMEN, but due to it being basically abandoned, the project was replanned to use whatever software would be more appropiate for it, and I thought ROS would be a good choice (please do correct me if I am wrong, although I'm coming to a ROS forum to ask, so I doubt I'll get negative opinions about it.)

The thing is, I see a lot of libraries regarding ROS and Kinect, and am wondering where to begin and how. If someone could please point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Gmapping is a good start if you wanna start doing SLAM with ROS.
If you want to try it before using it on your robot there are packages which provide gmapping: e.g. http://wiki.ros.org/turtlebot_gazebo/...
