How do I perform a color gradient for Rviz plugins?

I have visualization of anglular and linear velocities. I want to apply a color gradient to it on the scale of maximum to minimum velocities for my RViz plugin. Could you please guide me on how to do it?

It would be great if you could point me to relevant resources as well.
